Customer wants an island granite countertop with an 18" overhang. THE CUSTOMER DOES NOT WANT TO USE KORBELS instead they want us to RUN METAL BANDS PARRALEL WITH THE PLYWOOD FOR SUPPORT. Can this be done?  Where do we purchase these metal bands?

If I were you I would get an engineer involved. 18" overhand off of a 26" wide counter sounds like a breakage waiting to happen to me. Even if you use flat metal bands they are going to bow so while they will provide some support they will not provide enough in my opinion. Then again, I am not an engineer.
Sometimes customers want stuff that just isn't possible. I would support this with corbels or posts from the floor myself.

Glad to be of service,
Mark

There is a new support system called the hidden corbel.  It eliminates the need for traditional "knee knocker" corbels.

Check it out here. http://mcorb.com/
