I'm looking to buy a manageable size of granite slab to get started on doing my first cuts, edging, etc.  There are a few businesses in my area that fabricate granite tops that I could possibly make a purchase.  However, I'm a little wary of them knowing that I'm trying to get into that type of business.  I've also considered inquiring with a local monument stone supplier, which would not be a competitor.  What are your thoughts and experiences with this?

If you are a contractor you should be able to find stone suppliers locally. If you are a do-it-yourselfer then you should be able to go to the fab shops there and buy scraps from their boneyards - they would love to sell it off as it is of no value to them.

A monument supplier is not usually buying 2cm or 3cm slabs of stone, so I don't know how much help that will be for you.
