I am getting ready to install a granite tile (12x12) countertop. The granite pattern we chose (Rainforest) is not available in large slab, so I am going to make it using the 12 x 12 tile. Should I set them in thinset? Is there a better product like an epoxy? When I grout, can I use an epoxy grout? This will be a vanity top and I like the look of the 12 x 12 tile, but I am concerned with staining, and the grout lines.
Can a fabricate the edges of granite with a 4" grinder and a diamond flat wheel?
Any input will be much apreciated.
Thank You
John

You should set them in thinset. Make sure your subdeck is solid. I like a cementuous product like Wonderboard for a subdeck, but plywood is fine. I even know people who have gone right over a tile counter with new tile, but if you do this watch your height. You don't want to epoxy these in place, although you could put them in with mastic if you prefer. For grout use a nonsanded grout.

What type of edge are you trying to fabricate on these tiles? The tools are readily available to put an edge detail on them. After the detail you would polish them using dry diamond polishing pads and a variable speed grinder unless you want the expense of a wet polisher.

Let me know more of what you have in mind and I can give you step by step instructions on it.

Mark thank you for the info. We decided to use a "V" porcelain tile edge.
I am going to make the base from 3/4" plywood and then set with a gaged cement bed. Avalon tile recommended a 3 in 1 thinset for setting the tile. However I am still curious about the grout. I want something that is "bullet proof". Is there a good epoxy grout or I have seen them done using silicone for grout. The tiles are marble. Any thoughts?
