Author Topic: hand profilers for grinders - is there anyway to clean them or sharpen  (Read 2542 times)

I have a bullnose profiler for my grinder that I use on granite tile.  My brother in law borrowed it and used it to put a bullnose on travertine he was installing in his bathroom.  Every since it doesn't seem to cut as good and looks like it is gummed up with travertine dust etc. and it takes forever to shape the bullnose on granite now,  is there anyway to clean it or sharpen it so it will cut well again?

Thank you

Yauklin,
We can help but we need more info. First of all, this bit you have, is it a wet only tool or a dry tool? Is it sintered diamond, impregnated diamond or PBS (brazed)?
What grinder do you use this tool with and what grinder did your brother in law use it with?

If it is a wet bit and it was run dry you may have re tensioned the steel as well as glazing the bond.

Is there any way that you can take a digital pic of it and email it to me at mark@defusco.com ? That would give me a little more info.

The manufacturer says it can be used dry or wet it is made by a company called EZedge.  It was used wet with a Makita angle grinder that feeds water it's the same grinder my brother in law used with it on the travertine. Which afterwards it seemed not to cut the granite anymore. The company used to have a web page called EZEDGE.COM but it is no longer up it brings you to a different page.  I'm not sure about the diamonds if it is impreganted etc.  One person told me you might be able to run it in reverse to clean it. It is pretty much identical to the one made by Alpha below. But I'll try to take a pic of it when I get a chance.

Send me a pic of YOURS. I can see this Alpha tool is fine.

Running it in reverse is fine for impregnated tools but is of no value for electroplated or brazed tools (not to mention that you will be hard put to find a grinder that runs in reverse).

If it is a brazed tool it is worn out as there is no way it can glaze. You can try dressing it open by running it through something abrasive like a cinderblock, but if it is like the one pictured above where all the diamond is exposed then it is almost worn out and the diamonds that are left  have almost no cutting edges left to remove material.

Send a pic of yours please.
