I need to know if I can apply 12 X 12 granite squares to existing Formica kitchen counter tops? Do I have to remove the existing tops? Or can I rough up the surface manually or use an agent to promote adhesiveness after applying mortar and then the granite pieces. I will be doing this project by myself, so removing the counter tops is not the thing that I want (or need ) to do. Shocked

Sure you can, but why would you? Removing them is not that tough and then you can use a latex thinset right to the substrate they were adhered to and get less variables in the mix. If you are going to adhere them to the formica rough it up for better adhesion, but first make sure they are not going to move, flex or bow beneath the granite or this will cause tiles or grout lines to break. If I have a choice I am removing the formica first!

Glad to be of service,
Mark
