Trying to figure out how much and what type of support we need for our new granite counter tops.  We've installed Kraftmaid cabinets and are waiting on fabrication of granite.  I assume the granite can go right over the top of the cabinets (support is around the edges of each cabinet - on all 4 sides except over dishwasher where there is no support at front).

We are installing an island with bar seating on one end.  The bar is supported by base cabinets but has 12" of overhang at bar end.  I'm hoping to avoid traditional knee-killing corbels by using angle brackets but since these are only 1.5 inches wide as opposed to 4-6 inches of corbel should we be spreading the load with a layer of plywood or something??  I'm told support of 8 " from the cabinet should be adequate (we're getting supports that are 8-10").  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The granite can be siliconed right to the top of the cabinet provided the cabinets will hold 10lbs per square foot. Whoever is fabricating your counters should be doing the install and should know this. If you are going to hire this out I hope you are using a licensed contractor.

As far as the overhang, the cabinets are probably sturdy enough to support a 12 inch overhang, but as for the dishwasher I need a diagram to give you my input.
